Posted to their Facebook page, the episode is part of a deal with LEGO and 20th Century FOX, and incorporates the new release of the Simpsons LEGO construction set.
Speaking to TV Guide, LEGO's president of licensing Jill Wilfert said that initially while the merchandising was still being hashed out, they suggested that the show do an opening couch sequence.
"They quickly came back to us and said, 'Forget the couch; let's do an entire episode!'" said Wilfert.
"We're pretty picky about how our brand is represented," Wilfert said. "No one at the show is used to dealing with creative input from the outside".
The episode itself took two years to make and will air in the US on May 4th.
