For the Love of the Game – Radio Broadcaster Louise Heraghty Talks GAA

The clash of the ash, the dream of Croker and the pride of the parish. It all starts and ends with the GAA. Nothing beats being there, and with the most exciting days of the GAA calendar finally here, we're talking to some well-known Irish women about their love of our home game; where it all began, stand-out memories and supporters tales.  This week, we're chatting to radio and television presenter Louise Heraghty. ___________________________________________________________ How did you fall in love with the game? It would be fair to say that I got more interested in GAA in my 20's after attending WIT. There was a big hurling community & I enjoyed the celebrations when Waterford won the Munster final in 2002. I was always a Sligo GAA fan but only started going to games as I got older. What is your favourite GAA memory from growing up? I played under 12 for my local team (Calry/St Joseph's) & although I was mainly on the subs bench it was my first real experience of team sport & I loved the training & team trips with the other girls. Do you have any stand-out moments as a Sligo supporter in Croke Park? There was great excitement in 2002 when Sligo came from 7 points to beat Tyrone at Croke Park after coming through the qualifiers. They went on to draw with Armagh but got beaten in the replay. It was a great boost despite not getting further. Do/did any of your family play football? Yes my brothers played all through school for Calry. My dad was more of a soccer player so that's why I don't have the natural talent ha ha. What do you make of this year’s championship? Very exciting particularly after The Mayo Kerry draw last weekend. I have to shout for Mayo as they are my neighbours & they really deserve to win an All Ireland at this stage. It's easy to say the Dubs have it in the bag again but we could be in for a surprise as Donegal will be out to reclaim their glory.   For more information, please visit www.gaa.ie.
