Fox are being sued by two writers for allegedly copying their concept for its series New Girl.
The two writers, Stephanie Counts and Shari Gold, filed a lawsuit against the broadcaster, alleging that a pilot called Square One is the real basis for the New Girl story.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit states: "Any differences between the Square One scripts and New Girl are so small and insignificant that they cannot be afforded copyright protection, and are, in fact, nothing more than transparent attempts to hide Defendants' blatant plagiarism.
"These differences are more akin to eraser marks or ink blots on Stephanie and Shari's creation and cannot be treated as original expression."
According to the lawsuit, the pair wrote their work in 2006 and is based on "Stephanie’s real-life experience when she discovered her husband was having an affair, leading her to move into a three-man bachelor pad."
The lawsuit claims that their screenplay was used without permission by New Girl creator Elizabeth Meriweather, WME and Fox.
Counts and Gold are seeking an unspecified amount of monetary damages, as well as a public apology and credit on the series. The pair are also looking for an injunction against the Fox show.
