Freckling is the newest dating trend and honestly, it kind of sounds like a nightmare

It's grim enough.

Uh oh.

We’ve seen ghosting, breadcrumbing, benching, cushioning and phubbing break many hearts across the dating world.

And just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, it turns out there’s a new trend that singletons need to keep an eye out for.

In fact, it’s one you may have already experienced (or have been guilty of).

Introducing Freckling. And it’s fairly grim.

According to AskMen, the term refers to when you (or the person in question) get involved with someone during those romantic summer nights – but when the colder autumn days arrive, the relationship ends.

It gets the name from…well, freckles. The little dots surface on your skin once you start spending some time in the sun, only to fade in the fall.

The whole thing is basically like a reverse version of cuffing, which is when people couple up during the colder months to have someone to cuddle up with – and then split in the spring.

The most annoying part about it all, though, is that you’re most likely to be freckled by someone you know – which means they’re never really going to be disappearing from your life.

The publication notes:

“You can be freckled by someone, but that doesn’t mean they disappear forever – they’ll probably lurk on your Instagram over autumn and winter, occasionally watching your stories and liking your posts, only then to drop you a message come June 1st the next year.”
