The participants were asked to report the number of drinks they had consumed as well as the number of friends present while they were out. The results showed that men were more influenced to increase their drinking intake when their friend count started hiking, but women were affected too.
The study also found the people you socialise could encourage higher consumption if you are drinking with bole male and female friends.
The study is believed to be a stronger indication than any insight into peer drinking previously conducted, as the results come from a live environment rather than a lab study.
