Feeling the itch to book some flights?

February is the perfect time to book a holiday: it’s cold, it’s dark… it’s in dire need of a foreign jaunt. Meaning getting away from it all for a few days and having ‘zero’ cares in the world is a top priority.

In our travel episode of Girls With Goals, we talked all things travel (serious wanderlust envy alert). We asked travel bloggers Tara Povey and Stephanie Buckley for their recommendations and tips for the perfect European weekend getaway.

Listen in at 3:45 in the link below or keep reading.

1. Helsinki, Finland

Helsinki is becoming more and more popular with Irish tourists. We’ll admit, it’s an expensive city – but there are normally affordable flights over and back with Norwegian Air which makes life a lot easier.

Helsinki is a perfect mix of urban life and the great outdoors. Tara Povey recommends a town called Espoo, just 20 minutes from the city. Here you’ll find activities such as reindeer sleigh rides and husky sledding.

In a nutshell, Helsinki – which is easy to explore in a few days – seems to be more about the experiences than the sights, so why not visit the Finnish saunas, ride the Helsinki trams and relax at the adorable Regatta cafe?

2. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is sky-rocketing in popularity right now. Even better, it’s insanely affordable. The city makes you feel like you have stepped back in time with its narrow alleys, beautiful cobblestone streets, and colourful buildings.

In 2016, the Travel Media Awards named the Portuguese capital the Best City or Short Break Destination. It’s so picturesque and “so instagramable” says Girls With Goals presenter Niamh Maher.

Alternative options include a cooking class, sunset sailing tour, and the Alfama district (the oldest part of the city).

3. Glasgow, Scotland

This stunning city is too often overlooked. It’s got it all: food, culture, and nightlife and it’s less than an hour away from Dublin (handy for weekend-break travellers). Stephanie Buckley of Eat Sleep Chic named it as one of her top European city spots.

Her highlights included the amazing museums and getting a beer at the Drygate Brewery. Alternatively, take a cruise on the Clyde; it gives you a unique view of the city, and it’s a great way to get around.
