5 places worth taking a road trip to this long weekend

Orlaith Condon

It’s a bank holiday weekend and we’ve got some serious Friday Fever.

The May Bank Holiday is often our first chance to get excited for the summer holidays, and we’re determined the make the most of it this weekend.

While many may be heading off abroad for the long weekend, we’re embracing all that this beautiful country has to offer.

No matter where you live, you’re always only a hop, skip and a jump away from something truly amazing.

Here are five places worth a visit this weekend.

1. Killarney National Park, Kerry

It doesn’t get much more beautiful than this 26,000 acre national park. With stunning mountains, lakes, woods and waterfalls – Killarney National Park is the perfect backdrop for your long weekend.

2. The Great Western Greenway, Mayo

The 42 kilometre stretch between Westport to Achill is an off-road trail for cyclists and walkers. There’s plenty of beaches along the route also for those looking to get some amazing coastal view.

3. National Botanic Gardens, Dublin

Just north of Dublin City Centre lays one of the most stunning gardens you’ll find in this country. You’re also without throwing distance of Glasnevin Cemetery – two birds, one stone.

4. Dursey Island cable car, Cork

The route between Beara Peninsula and Garnish Island is too rough for boats to cross so hence, the cable car. The ten minute trip is not what most people imagine doing with their bank holiday, but the views and sights from the island are definitely worth it.

5. Causeway Coastal Route

Bank Holiday’s are meant for road trips and we can’t imagine a more stunning drive than the Causeway Coastal Route. With the stunning cliffs out one window, and the Glenn’s of Antrim out the other, this is the perfect way to make all your Instagram followers jealous.
