Seven handy ways to make money while you’re stuck at home

Anna Rourke

Bored in the house and I’m in the house bored…

You’ve baked, Netflixed, decluttered, crafted and Tiktoked and can’t face another Joe Wicks workout, board game or Zoom quiz – so why not try to make some money while you’re in lockdown?

If you have the time and a laptop, there’s a lot you can do to earn spare cash right now.

Transcription

Decent at typing, spelling and grammar? There are plenty of sites that will pay you to transcribe audio into text. They tend to pay by the word so you’d make more the more you do it and the quicker you get. Check out sites like Rev, TranscribeMe, and Babbletype or advertise your services on Fiverr.

Translation

If you have a second language, put it to use. Use Unbabel, Smartling, or Gengo to get started.

Share your skills

Fun skills like beginner’s guitar for kids or crafting might appeal to others who are isolating and wan to learn something new. If you think you could teach over Zoom, post an ad and see who bites.

Doing online surveys

You won’t earn a fortune but you can do this while watching telly. See IrishOpinions, Red C Live and OpinionWorld Ireland for more.

Website and app testing

Get paid to share your thoughts on your online experiences on Usertesting.com.

Sell your clothes

You’d be surprised at how much you could make on Depop, especially with occasion-wear, branded items and quality vintage pieces. Make sure to be active on the app and put an effort into your photos to drive sales.

Sell household items

Use DoneDeal, Facebook Marketplace or Ebay to shift anything from books and games to tech and electrical items, furniture or unwanted and unused gifts you’ve received – what you think is junk might be just what someone else is looking for. This might not be a big money-spinner but any tenner you earn here or there is better than nothing, right?
