If you don’t know the name Dave Tynan, you’re about to.

Tynan is a writer and director from Dublin and the mastermind behind the 2012 viral short, Just Saying. Earlier this year he gained international acclaim for the powerful We Face This Land.

Tynan’s latest film Heartbreak, is adapted from a piece from the award-winning play RIOT and was written by writer and actor Emmet Kirwan. Tynan says it was the strength of Kirwan’s words that inspired him to pursue this film.

“There was so much in this girl’s journey and how it was told; the pace, the honesty, the wordplay. There’s an optimism in the final moments that I didn’t see coming. I just wanted to stop everything and make this film,” said the director.

Tynan often merges art and politics, and it’s a combination that leads to his work soaring above mundane viral content.

“Any time our work has connected with a large audience, it’s because people care, because it’s emotive writing that’s well executed. If you’re trying to put work online you make a deal with the audience. I’d hope that deal is, here’s an honest story well told. You put the work in so an audience doesn’t have to,” says Tynan.

In making this film Tynan simply hopes people will be exposed to the story.

“I hope we tell a strong story above all else. It’s such a powerful piece. I hope we help more people see it. It deserves a large audience.”

Heartbreak stars Emmet Kirwan and Jordanne Jones.
