With our hectic lives and all of the new books that we are trying to keep on top of, we can often forget about the classics, those books that we loved to re-visit or the books that we just haven’t got to quite yet. Every week, we pick a classic book of the week that is a favourite of ours in the office. This week, we will be looking at the classic, The Three Musketeers.
“All for one and one for all.”
Originally published in serial form between March and July of 1844, The Three Musketeers tells the story of d'Artagnan, a young hopeful who sets off to Paris to join the King's Musketeers, a group of men who are solely dedicated to protecting the life of the King.

When d'Artagnan arrives in Paris however, he discovers that the King's Musketeers have been disbanded, thanks to the evil Cardinal Richelieu. Cast out of the capital with no hope for his future career, d'Artagnan discovers that the Cardinal has hatched a terrible plot to get rid of the King. Can he reform Athos, Porthos and Aramis and manage to save the King's life or will he be killed off by the Cardinal's messenger?
Although the story itself has aged quite a bit, the universal theme of loyalty and friendship has really not been lost on its many avid readers and while everyone always roots for a young and impressionable d'Artagnan, most people you discuss this book with will be able to pick their favourite Musketeer.
The book is also peppered with excellent characters, a brilliantly bad Cardinal Richileu, Milady de Winter, who has her own very interesting background and a story that will bring tears and laughter.
If you haven't checked this one out, it's an excellent read and well worth it. So is the Disney adaptation...
