Sarah Greene is the captain of UCD’s hockey team and she is also The Irish Times and Irish Sports Council’s Sportswoman of the Month for March.

This accolade has a lot to do with her team winning their third successive Leinster division one title, second Irish Senior Cup in three years and first ever Irish Hockey League.

We caught up with the midfielder to find out how she felt about receiving the award and her team’s recent success.

Here’s what she had to say about…

The Award
Well to be honest I was really surprised but I’m very honoured to have won the award and it’s great to have hockey recognised by the Irish Times.

Getting Involved
My auntie played hockey and she brought me down to a session when I was 10-years-old so I’m grateful to her for that. I have played with UCD for three years now and in that time I’ve gained experience which I think contributed to me being offered the captaincy.

The Success of the Team
At the start of the season, with the talent in the squad, I knew we had the potential to achieve great things provided we were committed and performed consistently well. Having said that, we surpassed all of our expectations for the year. I feel very lucky to be a part of a winning team. It’s not very often you get the chance to win the treble. It’s definitely been a season to remember.

The Benefits of Hockey
Well you learn a lot about teamwork, discipline and the commitment involved in playing a team sport. It’s also a great way to motivate yourself to stay fit and healthy whilst making friends and having fun.

Juggling Everything
It is difficult! I’m currently doing a Masters which has been quite demanding, but you learn to be organised. I’ve balanced sport in my life from a young age so I’m well used to it at this stage. In November, I hope to graduate and look forward to working hard on my hockey next year.
