Hidden gems you need to visit in Santorini

Alice Murray

Ditch the tourist traps and discover something special.

You’ve read the guide books, gawked at the Instagrams, and even dedicated a Pinterest board to your trip.

But forget about all the old clichéd places to visit in Santorini. There’s a lot more to this amazing island that white-washed houses and iconic sunsets.

Escape the tourist traps and explore your own path with some of these hidden gems instead

Go to Oia (but not when you think)

If you go to Oia in the evening, be prepared for crazy traffic, thousands of pushy tourists, and packed out restaurants.

Unfortunately, because the Oia sunset is so iconic, the little town becomes a tourist trap each evening from about 5 pm onwards. While you definitely should go and watch the sunset there at least once during the trip, why not ditch the crowds and go at sunrise instead? Honestly, it’s just as beautiful and you will have the place all to yourself. Pure bliss.

Cliff jump at Amoudi Bay

Not many people know about this hidden gem but it is definitely worth a visit. Amoudi Bay is a gorgeous little inlet in Oia. When you reach the sunset point in the town, simply follow the 250 stairs down to the ocean (if you walk past lots of donkeys then you’re on the right track). Follow the rocky path until you reach the small pier. Make sure you bring some water with you for the walk back up. It is an absolute killer.

Sunbathe at Red Beach

While Kamari is the most popular beach area in Santorini, don’t forget to visit some of the smaller beaches along the coast. Red Beach or Akrotiri beach is becoming more and more popular thanks to its crystal clear water and bright red volcanic sand.

Like most places in Santorini, you need to go early in the morning to have the place to yourself. Don’t forget to bring proper shoes to walk to the beach as the terrain is very rocky.

Visit Pygros

Pyrgos is a lovely village about eight km south-east of Fira. This little village is a great place to visit if you want to escape the tourist crowds and see where the locals live. Pygros is full of wonderful architecture and has some of the best views in Santorini thanks to its impressive vantage point.

Hike from Fira to Oia

If you’re feeling adventurous then a hike from Fira to Oia is one of the best ways to see the island. The hike takes anywhere between two and five hours depending on how fast you walk and how often you stop. Go in the morning if you would like to have the trail to yourself (and avoid the heat). Or, if you’re a sunset fan it’s also a great walk to do in the afternoon. Don’t worry, once you are done hiking you will be able to get the bus back to Fira.
