Last week, we took you on an unforgettable road trip through America’s west coast, and now this week, it’s time to explore Europe – InterRail ticket in hand.

With so many different options on each InterRail pass, we’ve picked out some of the best destinations you can stop off in in Europe – the way you do it and how long you spend there is all down to you.

Berlin

Germany’s capital is a must-stop on a trip like this. Its laid-back atmosphere, brilliant nightlife and just cool people attract thousands of visitors every month.

Handy hint: Head to the Potsdamer Platz quarter, and to 360 Berlin where you’ll ascend 203 metres in just 40 seconds to Berlin’s highest bar.

Lake Bled

Lake Bled is a lake in the north of Slovenia and will be one of the highlights of any inter-railing trip to Europe. Pack some good walking shoes and embrace the stunning surrounds of the area.

Handy hint: The food is unbelievable here so get ready to gorge.

Budapest

The capital of Hungary is absolutely breath-taking. From amazing views, brilliant nightlife and lots of festivals and events happening year round, you’ll never be bored.

Handy hint: Take in a Hungarian folklore show, go on a trip down the Danube and explore St Stephen’s Basilica.

Prague

Keeping with capital cities, Prague in the Czech Republic is another popular stop on the inter-rail trail. Architecturally beautiful, head to the Nusle district for some delicious craft beer.

Handy hint: Famous for its many cafés, try some of the city’s speciality coffee before hitting the historic gardens and parks.

Sarajevo

A name familiar to most Irish people thanks to Bono’s duet with Pavarotti, Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its restored centre is home to bustling cafés, winding alleys and friendly people.

Handy hint: Take a few days here to explore the many museums and galleries.

Dubrovnik

Nearby Dubrovnik is another stunning stop-off on a fantastic trip. The beautiful Croatian capital will leave you in awe thanks to its breath-taking scenery.

Venice

If you can venture down to Italy, make Venice a port of call on your way. No trip to the city would be complete without a jaunt in a gondola and a wander through the galleries.

Handy hint: Cool down with a delicious gelato and if you want one of the best, head to San Lio and the Boutique del Gelato but be warned, there will probably be a queue.

Krakow

One of the oldest cities in Poland, legend has it that Krakow was founded upon the defeat of a dragon. Its gorgeous streets and squares, friendly locals and welcoming atmosphere will make you want to stay here forever.

Handy hint: Spend your days in the Old Town soaking up the history admiring the churches and visiting the museums and Europe’s largest market square.

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Europe… other firm favourites include Paris, Barcelona and Amsterdam – and indeed, ALL of Italy – but it all depends on your route. The best thing? It’s on your doorstep so you can go back again next year, and the next, and the next….
