A new study has found that the larger your engagement ring, the more likely you are to divorce.

Over 3,000 US couples took part in the research at Emory University, which found that men who spent between £1,200-£2,400 on engagement rings were 1.3 times more likely to get divorced than men who spent between £300 and £1,200.

However, looking for a cheap deal can also end in tears, with those who spent £300 on a ring also experiencing higher divorce rates.

The survey reported that couples with weddings that cost more than £12,000 divorced 3.5 times as often as those who paid £3,000 to £6,000, and that “relatively low spending on the wedding is positively associated with duration among male and female respondents”.

If you really want to make sure you go the distance, the study also suggests that high wedding attendance and a flashy honeymoon “are positively associated with marriage duration.”

And here we were, thinking it was about finding the right person…
