Hot Times in the City! Top 5 Beach City Breaks in Europe

Talk about the best of both worlds...

Rebecca McKnight

If you can’t commit to a full fortnight in the sun this summer, but you’ve got a few days and want the best of both worlds, we recommend a city break, somewhere with a beach.

As the sun splits the stones outside, why not think ahead a couple of weeks. Soak up the sun on the home shores now, but we all know it won’t last, so why not plan to extend your sunshine-filled summer season with a mini-break to a city by the sea. We’ve got the heads up on five of our favourites. Bon Voyage!

Barcelona

Perhaps the most obvious choice! This Catalonian city will over you spectacular architecture, a fascinating history, great food and drink, a shopping centre to die for… and a stunning beach to lay on when it all becomes too much. Platja de la Nova Icària by day, the city by night. Perfect.

Nice

Aptly named, even if it’s not pronounced that way. This pretty French city will have you feeling like you just stepped into a postcard scene, from the beautiful old town right down to the waves lapping on the golden shores.

Berlin

One of our all-time top picks for a weekend break, chances are you’ve heard plenty about Berlin, but very little about its beaches. This achingly-cool German city offers incredible nightlife, a very friendly people, and sandy shores dotted with trendy beach bars.

Dubrovnik

This jewel of the Adriatic is the perfect city/sea combination for the sunseeker who’s looking beyond the obvious. A World Heritage site on the UNESCO list, this Croatian city’s crystal waters make for a magic holiday destination.

Copenhagen

The Danish capital boasts two beaches close to the city centre. Split your days between tourist activities in the cultural centre of the Denmark, originally a Viking fishing village, and the Amager Beach Park sands, where you’ll fine 5km of bathing and a shallow lagoon that’s perfect for swimming in.
