Martin Luther King Jr. was the leader of the American Civil Rights movement and a national icon in American history. Luther King advocated non-violence in civil marches and staged large protests across the States throughout the 1960's in an effort to gain equal rights for African Americans.
His speeches are still quoted to this day in the fight for equality and he has become an international symbol of hope and peace.
On April 4th, Luther King Jr. was shot in 1968 on his hotel balcony in Memphis; that balcony from the Lorraine Motel can still be seen today as part of the Civil Rights Museum.
