Irish author Maeve Binchy passed away last night after a short illness, and those who followed in her footsteps are paying tribute to the talented storyteller.
Ireland has a sterling reputation for producing quality female fiction writers, and many of those who make up today’s bestseller lists have taken to social networks to express their sadness at Maeve’s passing.
Cathy Kelly, author of fourteen novels including ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Homecoming’, said ‘The world is truly a darker place without the golden light of lovely Maeve Binchy. We’ll all miss her genius.’

Sheila O’Flanagan, prolific Irish author paid tribute to Binchy also, calling her a ‘warm, wonderful woman and an inspiration in so many ways.’
Marian Keyes, one of Ireland’s most popular writers, shared her sympathy for Binchy’s husband Gordon, saying ‘I can’t stop thinking about her husband… How devastated he must be. They were so kind to each other’.
Claire Allan, author of ‘Rainy Days and Tuesdays’ and ‘Jumping In Puddles’ said ‘God bless Maeve Binchy, an inspiration to so many of us.’
Claudia Carroll, former ‘Fair City’ actress and successful novelist referred to Binchy as the ‘mother of women’s commercial fiction’.
The tributes continue to pour in for Maeve, who was 72 at the time of her death. She will be very sadly missed, but her wonderful work will live on.
