An Irish mother has warned other parents after a baby product left her four-week-old daughter “almost bald”.
In conversation with Belfast Live, Siobhan Canavan said that she used Johnson & Johnson’s Top To Toe baby bath wash on baby Evelyn and following this, clumps of the child’s hair fell out.
Siobhan, who lives in Co Tyrone, said: “I hadn’t even got her out of the bath and her hair was lying there in the bath. I dried her off and the top of her head and down both sides was completely bald.
“I took a small pump from the bottle, rubbed it on my hand, gave her a wee swish around the body and whatever was left on my hand I put on her head, gave it a quick rub in and rinsed it off straight away.
“And the hair just came off in my hand. I know they do lose their hair after a few weeks but I tested it on my arm to see if it was the product and it did take some of the hair off my arm as well”.
The 24-year-old said that she double-checked the product to see if there was any warning of this possible side effect but couldn’t see any information on hair loss.
“I went back and checked the bottle to make sure and nowhere on it does it say anything about the fact it can cause hair loss.
“It’s called Top to Toe, it says it can be used on their head that’s why I used it. Everyone knows Johnson’s, it’s a well-known brand so that’s why I trusted it” she continued.
Siobhan told Belfast Live that she contacted Johnson & Johnson who apologised and asked her to send back the product.
A representative for the company said: “We are aware of the nature of the complaint, and have asked the customer in question to provide us with more information so we can investigate further”.
Earlier this week, a jury in St Louis, Missouri, ruled that Johnson & Johnson must pay $72 million (€65 million) to the family of a woman who claimed her ovarian cancer was caused by their talcum powder.
