Ireland were leading Uruguay 2-0 by the early stages of the second half thanks to goals from Anna O'Flanagan and Nikki Evans.
However, Uruguay were on hand to punish Ireland's lack of discipline - resulting in four yellow and two green cards - to come back and tie the game at 2-2 by the 44th minute.
A lifeline for Ireland came in the form of Connery's goal and much to the delight of supporters, booked them a spot in the quarter-finals.
