The Alzheimer Society of Ireland cafés are wonderful safe havens for people living with Dementia and their families. Many people come for the expert advice and care the health care professionals provide. But others simply come for the priceless company and the support that family members so willingly give each other.
“The Alzheimer Café is a great place for people to come for a bit of empathy. To talk to people who may be dealing with the same situation as you. It takes away the isolation which is so important. The Alzheimer Society of Ireland go above and beyond to make sure that no person goes through dementia alone,” said Eamon.
This year Eamon and Cathleen will be celebrating Alzheimer’s Tea Day in Cathleen’s favourite Alzheimer Café.
“Cathleen drinks tea by the bucket load. And she loves going to the Alzheimer Café because she always gets tea in nice china cups and in a proper tea pot.”
Cathleen’s quality of life simply wouldn’t be the same without the support of The Alzheimer Society or the loving care of her extraordinary son Eamon, but as Cathleen becomes more and more dependent on his care; Eamon’s personal life and career have been forced to take a back seat. It’s the story of so many wonderful carers all over Ireland, but he is both generous and philosophical about facing that challenge:
“What I miss most is my life. I don’t know where it is in the future. But I try not to look too far down the road. I just focus on today and trying to make sure Mam is loved and cared for and that she has her dignity at all times. That’s all that matters.”
