According to The Independent, the gang initially wanted to capture a zebra, however opted for ol' Serge, stealing him in the early hours of Thursday morning.
One of the youths, Mathieu, told BFM TV the group went in to play with the animals and ended up taking Serge with them.
“It walked with us like a good dog would have,” Mathieu explained.
“He moved along the tram and we couldn’t hold onto him... the inspector made him get off and tied him to a lamppost.” The boys were forced to cut their time with Serge short and left him in the care of the ticket inspector.
Serge was returned safely home and continued his duties the following day, not before a quick interview with the local news station.
The group were arrested after their exploits, however the owner decided to drop the charges after a campaign to prevent the lads from prosecution went viral over the weekend and the Llama was returned unscathed from his night out on the town.
