We live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Of course, we agree 100%…

Sometimes the best things are right on your doorstep, and according to Lonely Planet, that’s certainly the case in Ireland.

They’ve included the Wild Atlantic Way along the west coast of Ireland on their list of the best drives in the world.

To put it into perspective, other drives included on the list include Australia’s Great Ocean Road, America’s Route 66 and the salt flats of Bolivia.

“Ireland’s west coast is a dramatic procession of deserted beaches and towering cliffs with traditional music and ancient castles abound,” according to the new travel book, Epic Drives of the World, from Lonely Planet.

The Cliffs of Moher, County Clare.

“Ireland’s west coast is battered by Atlantic rollers, strewn with jagged cliffs and littered with wide beaches and sandy coves”, said Lonely Planet. “It’s a place where inky lakes shelter between mountains, sinewy stone walls clamber across hillsides and trees are frequently bent double by the wind.

“The roads here are narrow and winding, grass often grows along a hump in their middle and a herd of sheep can easily scupper all plans.”

Also included on the list is Northern Ireland’s Coastal Causeway Route which has Game of Thrones locations along its route.

“Road signs advertise the Dark Hedges up ahead, one of the many recesses of Ulster County now famous as a backdrop for the TV phenomenon Game of Thrones”, says the Lonely Planet.

Each entry into the book is a first hand account of someone driving the road which offers a lovely insight into the routes and useful tips for anyone thinking of trying them out.
