The figures have been described as "alarming".

If you’re fond of donning your heels, downing a drink and burning up the dancefloor on a Saturday night, you won’t like this news one bit.

The BBC reports today that nightclubs are closing at “an alarming rate”, with almost half of the UK’s nightclubs closing permanently in the last decade.

According to The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR), the number of clubs operating in the UK has shrunk from 3,144 to 1,733 since 2005.

Ministry of Sound boss Lohan Presencer told Newsbeat: “I don’t think the number of people going clubbing at the weekend is any different to where it was 20 years ago, but I do think they are going to different places.”

“I think people are finding different ways and different places to go out.”

The ALMR added that the venues it represents created 37,000 new jobs last year, with more than 80 per cent of those positions filled by 18-24 year olds.
