Mayo County Council pulled off a very effective April Fools trick today in order to raise awareness for a very important issue.

The Council put a cardboard cut-out of a Garda holding a speed camera on the side of a busy road and their message of “Don’t be fooled – speed kills!” was supported by local Gardaí.

“The purpose of the cut-out was to let people know the only ones they are fooling when they are speeding are themselves,” said Noel Gibbons the Road Safety Officer for the Council.

“People might have felt fooled if they slowed down when they saw the speed-gun in the distance, only to find out it was only a cardboard cut-out.

“The point we were trying to get across is that when you speed, you are putting yourself and others at risk,” he concluded.
