Mexico: A honeymoon couple’s paradise and escape from the world

Warning - you won't want to leave.

Choosing the perfect honeymoon destination can be tough.

Depending on how many extra days you can take from work and if budgets will allow, you have the chance to plan a trip of a lifetime.

If it’s paradise you’re looking for then Mexico is your answer.

We went to the eastern side of the country, to the Riviera Maya district. It has everything you would want for a honeymoon and the much-needed escape from reality after months of wedding planning.

Riviera Maya is located approximately 20 minutes south of Cancun, and it boasts a highly tranquil and relaxed environment. White sandy beaches, crystal clear water, great food and drink and wonderful locals.

Dotted along the coastline are plenty of plush hotels, most of which are All Inclusive.

Don’t let this put you off. They have upwards of eight restaurants and nearly any cocktail or drink you can think of. You may think that you will get bored of the food, but trust me, you won’t.

We stayed at Secrets Silversands Resort, and to say we were never left wanting anything would be an understatement. The moment we walked through the front doors we felt like we were in some sort of adult dreamland. With multiple pools and its own private beach, it was paradise.

At a place like this, it’s completely acceptable to have cocktails for breakfast. Nearly all the guests are there to relax and unwind so the pace of the hotel is perfect for honeymooners.

The rooms themselves were some of the best we’ve ever stayed at with state of the art facilities and views looking out to Carribean Sea. We even had two hot tubs in our suite, one in the bathroom and one on the balcony.

I can get used to this view ?

For dining options, they had French, Mexican, Japanese, World, Italian, Seafood, Steakhouse and a buffet breakfast that kept you full until lunch.

On different nights they have themed events with food on offer for guests, and you also have the opportunity to book romantic meals on the beach, in the wine cellar or be a part of the Teppanyaki cooking experience.

From the hotel, you can organise various day trips. We went on a shopping trip to Cancun on one afternoon and snorkelling out on the coral reef on another.

There are plenty of other trips available such as visits to Chichen Itza, Tulum Mayan Ruins, Isla Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and many others. The only trouble will be to convince yourself to leave the hotel for more than an hour or two.

The beauty about Cancun, and the surrounding area, is that they are so easy to get to, with flights going from Dublin to Cancun (via the States or London) nearly every day. We decided to go via the States, and stay for a few nights, before Mexico which was an added bonus.

This is the ideal location for a relaxed honeymoon and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
