Money, money, money: This is how much the average worker in Ireland earns

Olivia Hayes

Where do you fall?

We’re all a bit nosey and one thing most Irish workers are nosey about is just how much money their colleagues earn.

Of course, you should never intrude into somebody’s personal business, but whether you’re going for a promotion or a new job, it’s normal to stop and think about how much other people are paid so you don’t under – or over – sell yourself.

Well, recent figures from the Central Statistics Office show that the average Irish worker earned €37,646 in 2017.

It’s a two percent increase from last year’s earnings, with 2016’s average being €36,920.

The report states: “Average annual earnings for all employees, including regular, overtime and irregular earnings, were €37,646 in 2017, an increase of 2.0 percent from 2016.

“Average annual earnings were €46,402 for full-time employees in 2017, an increase of 1.7 percent from 2016. Part-time employees earned €17,059 on average in 2017, an increase of 3.2 percent in the year.”

To further that, “total cost of employing labour in 2017 was €77.2 billion, an increase of 5.9 percent from 2016,” says the CSO.

“Total annual labour costs were €62.3 billion in 2012 and have increased each year to 2017, up 23.9 percent to €77.2 billion in the five years.”
