State media in Iran announced today that the unnamed monkey was sent 70 miles up in a Pishtam, or Explorer, rocket.
It gave no other details on the timing or location of the launch, but said the monkey returned safely.
The claims have yet to be independently verified.
Iran has already said that its aim is to send an astronaut into space as part of its ambitious aerospace program. It has become a cause for concern among the international community amid fears that their technology could be used for weapons applications.
Turkish journalist Mahir Zeynalov tweeted this photo of the monkey today.
