Movie Review: Feel-Good Comedy Drama The Sapphires Will Put A Smile On Your Face

The Australian film, based on a true story and adapted from the stage play of the same name, is a musical/comedy/drama mash up that tells the story of four aboriginal women.

It's 1968 and sisters Gail, Cynthia and Julie enter a local talent contest. It is here they meet the talent scout and lovable Irish rogue Dave, played by the charming Chris O'Dowd, who promptly appoints himself as their manager. This sets the rag-taggle group off on an adventure, travelling to Vietnam to sing for the troops during the war.

Although the plot lacks focus and the film doesn’t authentically capture any real sense of the time period as it veers instead into slapstick Carry On territory, it is the warm heart at the core of the story that sees it through.

If you can check your cynicism at the door, the film’s humour, soundtrack and the talented cast will win you over and have you rooting for this unlikely girl group and celebrating the achievement of four impressive women.
