Pageant mothers are known for going to great lengths in a bid to secure their princess takes home the winning crown, however this story proves that some are willing to go the extra mile… even if there are some serious health risks.
In an episode of Untold Stories of the ER, a Florida-based nurse retold the horrific story of a mother who fed tapeworms to her daughter in the lead up to a competition.
Nurse Maricar Cabral-Osori admitted the teenager to hospital with severe stomach pains and an ultrasound scan quickly ruled out pregnancy.
It wasn’t long before Cabral-Osori discovered the cause of the patient’s problem, as she later discovered the young girl screaming over a toilet bowl.
The patient had passed a large amount of tapeworms, something Cabral-Osori described as “gross”.
"You saw the Mom turn white," Cabral-Osori explained.
"The Mom was apologising to the girl. She's like, 'I'm so sorry. You know, I just did it to make you a little skinnier. You needed some help before we went on to the pageant.'"
The girl's Mum admitted to medical staff that she had in fact purchased tapeworm eggs in Mexico and secretly fed them to her daughter.
