People are being warned not to wear novelty contact lenses this year

You might want to rethink your Halloween costume.

You might want to rethink your Halloween costume.

These days a lot of people pair their Halloween costumes with novelty contact lenses. Whether they are scary ones or just a different colour they’re all the rage.

But this year Specsavers are warning people not to use them as they can cause problems for your eyes such red eye, infections and scratches and, even worse still, vision impairment and blindness.

The main issue is that anyone can purchase them so they can easily be misused. Usually, when you are being prescribed with contact lenses for your vision you get a full consultation from a specialist about the proper way to insert and remove them.

The novelty variety also tend to be a lot thicker than regular contact lenses and can accidentally be left in for longer than the recommended time.

Specsavers Ireland spokeswoman Sinead Clohessy told the Irish Mirror: “Halloween contact lenses have become incredibly popular in recent years, however consumers are not often aware of the risks associated with misusing contact lenses.”

She added: “In particular, if a wearer hasn’t had a proper consultation with an optometrist beforehand, they probably haven’t been taught how to wear or care for their lenses correctly.

“The results can be nasty and range from mildly irritating complications, to potentially sight-threatening conditions such as fungal infections like Microbial Keratitis.”
