Specialist Shane Adriano and Private Tristian Resz married last Friday, in a courthouse in Springfield, Missouri. Dressed in their military uniforms, both men shared their special moment with family and friends, and posed for photographs to mark their special day.

The couple’s image has now been shared as a sign of how far along the military has come – with the kiss symbolling a supported equality neither men expected from fellow servicemen and women.

Speaking to LGBTQ Nation, Adriano admitted he’s overwhelmed by how many times and the numerous Facebook pages that have shared the photo:

“It just keeps getting re-shared. We had a little bit of negative comments on there, but I wasn’t even expecting that many people to like it and share it over and over again.”

“The majority of people who were commenting and sharing, they were doing it because they are proud of how far the military has come. Up until 2011 it was illegal to be openly gay in the military. Now, it’s legal for us to be married.”

The “Don’t ask, don’t tell” (DADT) rule was the official United States policy prohibiting gay and lesbian people from serving openly in the military.

Issued on December 21, 1993, the law was only revoked in September, 2011.
