Disney princesses are something the majority of young girls adore. One Italian artist wants to challenge the franchise over their discrimination against people with disabilities.
Artist, Alexsandro Palombo, has completed his own set of Disney Princess illustrations to highlight the the issue of social exclusion.
Palombo reimagines Snow White in a wheel chair, Pocahontas on crutches, and Cinderella with an artificial limb.
The images, uploaded on the artist's blog,
humor chic, have gone viral.
The post asks: "Have you ever seen a disabled protagonist in a Disney movie? You sure don't because disability doesn't match Disney' standards!"[sic]
In an interview with the
Huffington Post, Palombo explained that the inspiration for the series came about after a battle with cancer left parts of his body paralysed.
"Every day I have to deal with all forms of discrimination," he explained.
"Through this series I wanted to give visibility to this problem of strong discrimination directed to the persons with disabilities who live in our society."
Palombo's images challenge what is seen as "conventional beauty". The artist believes that introducing such characters would provide great opportunities for adults to talk to children about people with disabilities.
