Flora have decided to go with a little bit of an edgier advertising campaign of late in South Africa. One of their new adverts has been causing a stir however, and not for the right reasons.
The advert shows a bullet which is labelled "Uhh Dad, I'm Gay" which is heading for a porcelain heart against a pink background. The caption reads "You need a strong heart today".
The ad itself is via a South African source. The advert itself has been criticized as homophobic.
Not the best move.
UPDATE: Tuesday, September 3rd, 9.45 am
Statement from Unilever:
“This advert was prepared by an external agency in South Africa and was not approved by anyone at Unilever. The advert is offensive and unacceptable and we have put an immediate stop to it. Unilever is proud of the support that our brands have given to LGBT people, including our recent campaign for Ben & Jerry’s on equal marriage.”
