Michael D Higgins’ Christmas and New Years message has a very important focus this year.

The president’s message was released yesterday and it focuses on those who will be homeless during the festive period in Ireland, and around the world.

Higgins begins his message by comparing the iconic symbol of the nativity and the manger where Jesus was born with the increased need to ensure that people in need are provided with shelter this Christmas.

He said:

“This Christmas, once again, the burden of homelessness will overshadow the festive season for those deprived of a secure and permanent shelter.

“We are challenged, I suggest, to turn this time of celebration into a sustained commitment of awareness and care for those for whom each day is an act of survival.”

President Higgins also took it upon himself to thank the volunteers and groups who give up their time to help “some of our most marginalised people.”

“Their work is an inspiring example and an uplifting reminder of the real will and capacity that exists among the people of Ireland to reimagine our society and achieve an inclusive republic for all of our citizens.”

There are currently more children in emergency accommodation across the country than ever before.
