PREVIEW: All-Ireland Ladies Football Finals

The countdown is officially on to the highlight of the ladies football calendar, as players and supporters across the country gear up for the TG4 All-Ireland ladies football finals this Sunday. The senior final sees Dublin take on Cork in one of the most anticipated games of the year. Earlier this year the two sides met in the National League Division 1 final for a cracker of a game. Cork came out on top from that encounter, so Dublin will be looking to take the crown this weekend. Indeed, the two sides last met in an All-Ireland final in 2009, a year that saw Cork win the camogie and the football. Now, with the camogie already in the bag, Cork will be hoping to do yet another historic double this weekend. Cork have won eight of the last nine All-Ireland finals, with Dublin winning back in 2010 when they overcame Tyrone. It is truly set to be a fantastic battle of wills and a superb display of football, kicking off in Croker at 4pm. Ahead of that, New York and Wexford ladies will get the action of the day underway when they face-off at 11.45am in the junior football final. This is a massive occasions for this two teams. New York last contested this final in 2011, though they lost out on that occasion to Wicklow. Meanwhile, Wexford are last year’s runner-ups and will draw on the experience of losing that game to Offaly to help motivate them. The intermediate showdown gets underway at 1.45pm, and sees Down take on Fermanagh. Both teams have had a tough slog over the last few years, working tirelessly to make the breakthrough. Finally, the hard work has paid off and this is one of the most interesting line-ups on the day, that is sure to produce a few surprises. Make sure to get your hats, scarves and headbands out and cheer on the ladies this weekend in Croke Park – it’s set to be a cracking showcase of ladies sport.
