Prosecco Fan? You’re Not Going To Like This News…

We're NOT okay with this.

Cathy Donohue

We’re partial to a glass of bubbles and so, this news was met with a few dismayed faces in the Her.ie office.

It’s thought that the cheaper sparkling wine available in supermarkets has led to an increase in sales and now there’s a strong possibility that prosecco will run out in the UK.

A wine supplier spoke to Harpers.co.uk at the recent London Wine Fair and said that there may only be two month’s worth of the Italian drink left until the new harvest comes on the market.

If it runs out over there, it won’t be long before the same happens here and we are NOT okay with this news.

Robert Cremonese is export manager at Italian prosecco producer Bisol and he believes there may be a possibility of a global shortage.

Speaking to The Drinks Business, he said: Last year’s harvest was very poor, and down by up to 50 per cent in some parts, so there is a very real possibility of a global shortage”.

“We’ll find out how big the problem is in August when the brokers release their stock. At the moment we don’t know how much Prosecco they’re holding on to”.

“Because there is such a demand for Prosecco, the négociants are releasing it onto the market slowly and are taking it as an opportunity to put prices up, in some cases by 50%”.
