Review: Postscript is a heartachingly beautiful story of love, loss and learning to let go

Keeley Ryan

There’s always one more thing to say…

Postscript is a heartachingly beautiful tale of love, loss and learning when to let go.

More than 15 years after the original story was published, the highly-anticipated sequel to Cecilia Ahern’s P.S. I Love You hits shelves today [September 19].

And it was definitely worth the wait (just remember to have tissues within reaching distance when you start reading).

Holly Kennedy’s husband, Gerry, died seven years ago – and it’s been six yers since she received his final letter, which urged her to go forward and move on with her life.

And she is so proud of all the ways she has grown and evolved since then.

But everything is thrown for a loop when an appearance on her sister’s podcast leads a group inspired by Gerry’s letters ask her for help. And the P.S. I Love You Club start to draw Holly in to a world she had worked so hard to leave behind.

A reluctant Holly starts up a relationship with the club – even if their presence threatens to destroy her peaceful life she has worked so hard to achieve.

Each member of the club calls on Holly to try and help them leave something meaningful behind for their loved ones.

But for Holly to give the P.S. I Love You club a positive experience, she has to analyse the letters that Gerry left behind in a way she never thought she would.

Were they an entirely positive experience? Was there anything she would want to change? What did the letters really mean for him? And what about for her?

Did Gerry’s letters help her heal or hold her back?

To watch Holly get drawn back into her past is both heartbreaking and enchanting – particularly with the new memories of Gerry and their relationship perfectly sprinkled throughout.

The members of the P.S. I Love You Club and their stories are written with such care that it’s hard not get invested in their fates – did they manage to all achieve what they had been hoping for?

The book achieves the perfect balance between what is happening to the members of the club and Holly’s journey. Especially as she comes to realise that when you love someone, there’s always one more thing to say…
