Richard Hinds has been found guilty of the murder of Irish student Nicola Furlong.
The 19-year-old from Tennessee, USA, has been sentenced to a minimum of five years and a maximum of 10 years with labour.
Ms Furlong, a 21-year-old from County Wexford, was found strangled in the Keoi Plaza hotel in Tokyo last May.
Ms Furlong met Hinds after attending a concert on the night of her death.
She had been studying in the country as part of her studies at Dublin City University.
The judge said that Hinds showed no signs of remorse and had tainted the honour of the victim.
The prosecution had argued for a 10-year prison sentence during the trial. It is the maximum a minor can receive in Tokyo.
Last week James Blackston, a friend of Hinds, was convicted of sexually assaulting Ms Furlong’s friend who was with her on the night of her death.
