Second Wachowski Sibling Comes Out As Trans Following Threats From Media

Ellen Tannam

The Wachowskis are filmmaking siblings who are famous for films like The Matrix and the recently acclaimed Netflix series Sense8.

The two directors were born male, but Larry (or Lana as she is now known), came out as a trans woman in 2012.

Now, the second Wachowski sibling (formerly Andy) has also made the announcement that she is trans and will be referred to now as Lily.

She made a statement to Chicago LGBTQ newspaper The Windy City Times, where she revealed that a journalist from The Daily Mail threatened to out her as trans unless she cooperated with them for an article.

Instead, she spoke of how this invasion made her feel:

“He proceeded to explain he was a journalist from the Daily Mail, which was the largest news service in the UK and was most definitely not a tabloid. And that I really had to sit down with him tomorrow or the next day or next week so that I could have my picture taken and tell my story which was so inspirational!”

She then realised that the Daily Mail was the same publication that forcibly outed another trans woman previously, Lucy Meadows, who committed suicide shortly afterwards.

Lilly then called for greater acceptance for trans people in general:

“Being transgender is not easy. We live in a majority-enforced gender binary world. This means when you’re transgender you have to face the hard reality of living the rest of your life in a world that is openly hostile to you.”

“I am one of the lucky ones. Having the support of my family and the means to afford doctors and therapists has given me the chance to actually survive this process. Transgender people without support, means and privilege do not have this luxury. And many do not survive.”
