Sharing A Car With A Sibling? We Feel Your Pain…

It's like they're trying to annoy us

Her

Keeping the peace in an Irish family is a challenge at the best of times. If you’re lucky enough to have brothers and sisters, you’ll know that they have the unique ability to make your temper flare faster than anyone else on the face of the planet. And if you’ve shared a car with one of them (and survived to tell the tale), you’ll know that it’s a special type of torment that can test you to your very limits.

Here are five things that only people who’ve shared a family car will have suffered through…

The never-ending cycle of pick-ups…

And drop-offs. No matter what hour of the day or night it is, there’s always someone to be brought to or collected from somewhere. It’s like running a taxi service. And it’s always when you’re running late or trying to get home early that you get a call from Mam or Dad asking you to pick up someone from god-knows-where.

The unwanted surprises…

Getting into the car to find that your brother and his friends have left the remains of last night’s takeaway all over the back seat requires a special level of patience that you just don’t have first thing in the morning. Or at any hour of the day for that matter. We won’t even mention the fury that comes with opening the boot to find a sea of smelly gear bags and boots. The smell wafting through the car is enough to bring on a fit of road rage.

The constant re-adjusting…

Of the seat, the mirrors and the radio station. You don’t understand why things can just be left the way you like them, or how the hell your sister sees anything coming with the mirrors left in that position. And when will your brother learn to treat the gear stick with the TLC it deserves?

The fuel wars…

There’s nothing worse than turning on the car and realising that you’re running low on petrol. Very low. Even though you filled up the whole tank a couple of days ago. Does your sister not understand that when she drives somewhere she’s actually also using petrol? And that the tank doesn’t just magically fill up itself?

The lack of freedom…

A driving license is supposed to bring with it the ultimate feeling of independence whereby you can head off on the road whenever your heart desires. When you’re sharing a car, however, sometimes it can feel like just the opposite. You can’t make plans for a road trip too far in advance and you never really know when someone else is going to need the car for an emergency. It’s just so unfair.
