Here’s a fact that will immediately make you feel old: it’s been 26 years since The Simpsons first appeared on our television screens.
Yes, on April 19th 1987 we met Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie from the first time and, if you’re anything like us, you’ve been watching them religiously ever since.
If there’s one thing that The Simpsons is known for (aside from their ‘Treehouse of Horror’ Halloween episodes) it’s their musical numbers. To celebrate the show’s birthday we thought it was only fitting to have a bit of a reminisce and look at the top 10 musical numbers from The Simpsons.
We couldn't get all the clips due to copyright infringement but we made sure we got the most important part: the songs themselves. Which one was your favourite?
________
10. “Stop The Planet Of The Apes I Want To Get Off”
Believe it or not this song was written as a biting satire of Broadway. Featuring lyrics such as “I hate every ape I see/from chimpan-a to chimpanzee” this is one of those Simpsons moments that everyone remembers.
9. “Spiderpig"
When The Simpsons Movie came out everyone was singing this tune. It's amazing and we love it (almost as much as we love the reference to 'Harry Plopper' in the film!).
8. “Lisa It’s Your Birthday”
The episode where Homer meets ‘Michael Jackson’ in a mental institution is a classic and it brought us this fantastic tune. If you have a friend called Lisa chances are you sing this at her every time her birthday rolls around.
7. “Canyonero”
Granted this an advertisment for a car endorsed by Krusty the Klown but you can’t deny that it’s an absolute classic. We love this Simpsons moment. G’wan Canyonero!
6. “Monorail”
This chancer has sold Monorails to Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook and by God, it put them on the map. So it only makes sense that the residents of Springfield jump on board and build one in their little town. Is it sad that we know all the words to this?
5. “Baby On Board”
A little known fact about Homer Simpson: he was once a member of a very successful barbershop quartet (that featured Barney, Principal Skinner and Apu). They even won a Grammy! We love this parody of The Beatles. It’s perfect!
4. “We Put The Spring In Springfield”
There was absolute outrage in Springfield when La Maison Derriere opened its doors. The residents were so angry about having a gentleman’s club on their doorstop that they formed an angry mob and tried to rip the place down. That was when Homer and the girls performed this little number in an attempt to appease the masses.
3. “Who Needs The Kwik-E-Mart?”
We all remember the episode where Apu gets sacked from his job at the Kwik-E-Mart and ends up moving in the Simpsons. Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart? We Doooo!
2. “We do”
Believe it or not but this episode of The Simpsons was actually nominated for an Emmy because of this epic song. The writers decided to put this song in the middle of the episode for the simple fact that they hated when characters broke into song for no reason. Makes sense.
1. “See My Vest”
We have no words except: this little number by Mr. Burns is actually legendary.
