Today is one of the greatest days of the year, yes folks it is National Potato Day.
As Irish homes prepare to have a feast of spuds - mashed, boiled, baked, roasted, fried and steamed, we discovered a story that may put you off eating all of the above forever.
There is an old wives tale that if a woman places a potato in her vagina it will work as the perfect contraceptive method. Never heard that one? Fret not, you are not alone as either have we, but in Columbia this ancient practice is alive and well thanks to one 22-year-old woman.
Medical staff at a clinic in the central Colombian town of Honda discovered that a woman, who has remained unnamed for obvious reasons, had inserted a potato into her vagina after complaining of abdominal pains.
When asked by staff the reason behind placing the vegetable in her vagina, the woman explained that she had been advised to do so by her mother in a bid to avoid getting pregnant.
“My Mom told me that if I didn’t want to get pregnant, I should put a potato up there, and I believed her.”
Getting to the root of the problem...
The potato had been inside the woman for two weeks and germinated, growing roots that caused her to experience intense pain in her lower abdomen.
Nurse on duty, Carolina Rojas, thought initially that the woman had been the subject of a practical joke however blamed her mother for not providing her daughter with information regarding proper contraception methods.
While researching the authenticity of this story we discovered that Coca Cola douching was used as a means of contraception in America in the 50s... The Internet really is a weird and wonderful place.
