We wouldn't be planning any picnics this weekend.

We’re through the worst of it…

But I wouldn’t be planning any picnics over the weekend.

Storm Gertrude has firmly taken hold as thousands woke up without power.

Status Yellow warnings remain in place until midday today in counties including Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo, with winds expected at about 100 km/r with gusts reaching up to 130km/h in some areas.

According to Met Eireann:

“An extremely windy start to Friday with further severe or damaging gusts – overnight rain clearing eastwards early in the morning, with some thundery bursts of rain for a time yet.

“However a clearance will quickly develop – brightening up even as of early morning in some parts, with a mix of sunshine and scattered blustery showers following for the rest of the day.

“Turning cooler through the day, with some hail showers occurring in the north and west later – showers will be more widespread at that point too.

“Highest afternoon temperatures will range a near normal 7 to 11 degrees Celsius.”

As for the weekend, Saturday is expected to be cold with peak temperature a chilly 7 degrees. It will remain dry at least, but Ulster may be hit with some Wintry showers.

Sunday will be warmer with temperatures between 11 and 13 degrees, however rain is anticipated for the first part of the day, clearing up in the evening.
