Scientists have claimed that they have formulated a drug that will reduce the harmful effects of binge drinking on the brain, with initial tests on rats showing reduced brain cell loss and inflammation, as well as an improvement in their memory.
The research is being carried out at the University Of Huddersfield and the new drug, named ethane-beta-sultam, has been developed over the last ten years by British, Belgian and Italian scientists.
It is understood that binge-drinking may have long-term effects on memory, decision-making and the ability to pay attention, with teenagers at increased risk due to fact that their brains are still developing.
Those involved with the development of the drug are also hoping that the drug could be used in new treatments for Alzheimer's and other brain diseases,
