Trying to pick a name for your baby boy can feel like an impossible task at times, but some monikers are proving incredibly popular with Irish parents at the moment.
The Central Statistics Office recently revealed the most popular baby names in Ireland for 2025.
Rían and Sophie were announced as the top baby names in Ireland last year. The monikers knocked Jack and Sophie off the top spot, but Jack remained in the top five baby boy names for 2025.
This is the first time Rían reached the number one spot since the CSO launched the baby name series in 1964.
This was the first time Jack was not the most popular choice since 2016.
What makes the name Rían so special? Many parents adore the meaning behind it. The name Rían means 'small king', making it quite the fitting moniker for your baby boy.
Jack was revealed as the second most popular name for baby boys in Ireland. The name Jack means 'God is gracious.'
In third place was the name Noah, which means 'rest'.
James came in fourth place. This traditional moniker means 'supplanter'.
And finally, Oisín was the fifth most popular name for baby boys born in Ireland in 2025. The name Oisín means 'little deer', making the Irish name one of our personal favourites.
Irish names are proving to be as popular as ever, with new entrants including Dáire, Naoise, and Teidí.
Commenting on the trends in Irish baby names, Seán O’Connor, Statistician in the Vital Statistics Section of the CSO, said: “Rían has been increasing in popularity since 2018 and entered the top five in 2021. It was also the first time since 2018, when the CSO started including names with the síneadh fadas, that a name with a fada reached the top spot."
