There are four types of drunks according to science

Megan Roantree

Which one are you?

If you’re a frequent drinker you will probably already know what kind of drunk you are, some people are happy drunks, some are emotional, and some like a completely different person when they’re under the influence.

But scientists have whittled it down to four characters which they say everyone falls under.

Psychology researchers from the University of Missouri at Columbia have published a study in Addiction Research & Theory about categorising drunks.

The study looks at 374 undergraduates and used literature and pop culture references to concluded four types of drinkers: the Mary Poppins, the Ernest Hemingway, the Nutty Professor and the Mr. Hyde.

The group the largest amount of people fell under was the Hemingway group, which is named after the author who claimed he could ‘‘drink hells any amount of whiskey without getting drunk’’.

So if you can drink all night and act the same, you’re a Hemingway.

Then there are the Mary Poppins types, the one we’d probably all like to be. They are “practically perfect in every way” as the nanny describes herself in the original movie. So if alcohol only makes your lovely personality even nicer and sweeter, you’re a Poppins.

And the Nutty Professor is exactly as it sounds, drinking alcohol leads a shy, introverted person to become hyper, chatty and outgoing.

And then there is the one perhaps no one wants to fall under, the Mr. Hyde like the well know story of Jekyll and Hyde, becomes a less pleasant twin when under the influence. If you’re a Mr. Hyde you are ”less than average in Conscientiousness, Intellect, and Agreeableness when drunk”

”Most would agree that the main problem with alcohol consumption – aside from the health complications that can result from excess use – is that some drinkers respond to intoxication in ways that cause harm” The Study said.

The researchers involved hope that these simple identifiable characters used to describe types of drunks can help people to recognise harmful characteristic and to intervene.

So if you or your friend is a Mr.Hyde it might be time to tone it down on the shots.
