So this is completely bizarre.
Over six years ago, Arkansas native Schuler Benson logged into Facebook mobile to discover he was somehow, inexplicably signed into someone else’s account. What’s more, according to
Hello Giggles, he was unable to sign out of it. The account belonged to Celeste Zendler who lived in Colorado.
The pair had no friends in common and could not understand why Schuler could suddenly access Celeste’s account.
As the problem persisted, Schuler would post as Celeste, commenting that he was unable to sign out.
“Once again, this is not Celeste,” he wrote as Celeste. “If any of her friends are online, please tell me how to LOG OUT of FB mobile.”
She would respond to him while still logged into her own account.
“Uh, well this IS Celeste and if you scroll down to the bottom and hit log out it should work. Weird that you are logged in at the same time as me…”
We bet that looked confusing.
Schuler attempted multiple times to log out of the account but every time he opened the app on his phone he was logged in as Celeste.
In fact, they could both be logged into her account at the same time. They ended up posting back and forth on her wall, “This is Celeste,” “This is NOT Celeste.
They tried to fix the glitch multiple times but couldn’t figure it out. Until, strangely, the pair became Facebook friends.
They moved on with their lives but remained pals.
“I enjoyed his status updates. He would post such funny stuff that I liked having him in my feed. We commented here and there on each other’s statuses and that is how we got to know one another,” Celeste said in a piece in
Heavy.
After two years of cyber friendship, the pair began dating.
Then, in 2014, Schuler logged into Celeste’s account one more time. This time to pop an important question.
The couple married last year. There is still no explanation for the weird glitch but now the couple considers it luck. Schuler wrote:
“In the fall of 2009, Facebook already had over 175 million users. Rounding down, the odds of us connecting were less than 1 in 175,000,000. Statistically speaking, you’re about 300 times more likely to be struck by lightning. You’re more likely to be bitten by a shark… on land. And you’re about as likely to win the Powerball Jackpot… with the exact same numbers as someone else.”
