This Letter From Harper Lee To A Young Fan Is So Sweet

'Don't think you are the most important being on earth.'

Ellen Tannam

Yesterday the sad news broke that Harper Lee, acclaimed author of To Kill A Mockingbird passed away yesterday.

Since then the literary world has been paying tribute to the writer who died at the age of 89.

Letters of Note drew our attention to a lovely correspondence she had with a fan who had written asking for a signed photo:

Dear Jeremy

I don’t have a picture of myself, so please accept these few lines:

As you grow up, always tell the truth, do no harm to others, and don’t think you are the most important being on earth. Rich or poor, you then can look anyone in the eye and say, “I’m probably no better than you, but I’m certainly your equal.”

(Signed, ‘Harper Lee’)
