Speaking to The Luxury Spot, Mary explained that she tried to dissuade Lyra from the idea by distracting her but eventually after much back and forth, she gave in. Mary said that she told Lyra if her school agreed, she would change her hair in time for first grade. Below is Lyra's unicorn look: teal green locks with a side shave and a sun-inspired design that included yellow, purple and red.
Mary shared photos of Lyla's look on Instagram which received some backlash with people suggesting that the little girl was too young for such a drastic hair change. When asked for her response to such criticism, Mary said:Beautiful #mybabygirl#kidswithrainbowhair#manicpanic#rainbowhair#colorfulhair#kidswithcolorfulhair#unicorntribe#unicornhair#bluehair#greenhair#coolkid#artistic A photo posted by Mary Thomaston (@marythomaston) on
"Really? Because when you’re a grown up with crazy-colored hair, people say that such things are for kids. "It’s a contradiction. I say why not let them have fun while they’re young! Who knows what type of job she may end up with, but a lot of them won’t allow unnatural colors. When you think about it that way, it’s actually the perfect time to let them experiment with color".People also said that the colour could potentially harm Lyra's scalp but as Mary is an expert in all things hair-related, she was clued in and used non-toxic and non-permanent dye, Manic Panic.
