Alabama author Harper Lee, who penned the iconic ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, has died today, aged 89 years old.
The news of her death was confirmed by the mayor’s office of Monroeville, Alabama – where Lee was resident.
Despite only ever releasing two books, Lee was considered one of the greatest writers in American literature – with her novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ being used to explore issues of racial tension and honour in America. She later went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 for her efforts.
She was later honoured by President George W. Bush in 2007 with the Presidential Medal Of Freedom and by President Barack Obama in 2010 the National Medal of Arts for her contributions to literature.
In 2015, Lee excited the literary world when she released her sequel novel ‘Go Set A Watchman’- which followed the lives of Scout, Atticus and Jem two decades later.
Lee’s second released novel is the fastest-selling book in the history of HarperCollins Publishers.
